Huawei Technologies Research & Development Belgium NV is a centre of excellence for silicon
photonics design and processing. It was initially created as the spin-off Caliopa from the University of
Gent and imec in 2010 but was acquired by Huawei in 2013. Huawei is the global No.2 telecom solution
provider and uses approximately one sixth of all photonics components produced in the world.
Huawei aims to significantly reduce the cost of these components by investing aggressively in silicon
photonics research and development and implementing solutions based on this technology. Caliopa,
now part of Huawei’s European Research Centre (ERC), is at the very heart of this research and
development.
Huawei Technologies Research & Development Belgium NV is developing technology platforms with
innovative structures which require photonic waveguides on multiple levels. To achieve these structures
typical CMOS-compatible processes are incorporated into an innovative photonics process flow on a
200mm Si platform resulting into photonic integrated circuits (PIC’s)
An increasingly level of effort is currently being invested in development activities that target the
integration of active components into the technology platforms and that support advanced innovative
packaging solutions.
We are now looking for Process development engineer to join our process development team in

Ghent who will participate in ongoing and new development work of technology platforms in co-
operation with external partners and foundries.

Your responsibilities will include:
- Process development of ongoing and new process platform development programs
- Establish a basic understanding of the process flows of the existing technology platforms with
a focus on their back-end aspects
- Develop and test new processes on a small scale before they are transferred to 200mm wafer
platform
- Define, characterize and optimize existing process steps / modules with the overall
performance of the processes and products in mind
- Hands-on processing and sustaining activities in clean room (wafer and die inspection, dicing,
patterning ,metallization, wet and dry etch, etc )
- Support and contribute to the overall process and product development activities within Caliopa
when required
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Master degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or in a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in electronics /photonics / materials industry
- Willing to do hands-on work in clean room environment and being involved in sustaining work
- Basic understanding of typical CMOS processes (CVD, photo lithography, dry and wet etch,
metallization, metrology, CMP, wafer bonding)
- Fluent in English (written and spoken)
- Detail-oriented
- Good reporting skills
Other desirable skills would be an advantage (but are not a requirement):
- Dutch and/or Chinese language knowledge
- Hands-on experience with clean room processing
If you desire to embrace the above described challenge, with a very high level of technical innovation,
being part of a multicultural team and growing environment, feel free to contact us. Driving future
technologies with focus on customer satisfaction is one of our missions. Join us!
